With inserters i have found that they only place 5 in a furnace at once. any way to get them not to do that??? its driving me crazy

What do you want exactly ? Put only 1 in the furnace or put max stack ?
Either way, the inserter won't do it. Because it's how they work.

This is usual. All inserters will throw an amoutn of the raw product into a furnace or assembler and stop when it hits that amount. They will never fill it up all the way.

If you want that to stop, come up with a system that controls the supply so that it only works 1 at a time.

It's because if a furnace filled up entirely with ore, and you had a line of 5 furnaces, you would have only 1 going for ages until you final filled it, and the next furnace would start filling. It would take forever for production to get gong.

Also note, extra fuel doesn't make them burn any faster, just longer. If you've got enough automation to have inserters feeding furnaces, you probably have a steady source of coal which means you don't need it to store more than 5 because you shouldn't have any shortages that aren't caused by a lack of coal, in which case you need more miners, not more fuel in the furnaces.
