Hi,

After seeing and implementing a layout for research which used inserters between labs to move the red/green items in this way :

I tried to use the same approach with two assembling machine this way :

But then the copper plates and gear wheels are not moved from assembling machine left to assembling machine right.
Is there something missing in this setup or is this just not possible (in game itself or maybe mods)

Thanks

You're not doing anything wrong. It's just not something you can do with assembly machines.

Inserters pointing outwards from assemblers only take the final product - labs work because they do not output any items. For example, you can have something like a gear assembler feeding into a belt assembler. The inserter will feed the belt assembler gears, but it won't steal all the iron from the gear assembler.

This works only on entities without outputs.

OK, clear and understandable.

Thanks for the clarification

To be clear, just having an inserter does work with assemblers, chemical plants, etc., but only when taking an output and placing it as an input. For example with green circuits is a very common one. And you will find several where the ratio is about right.
