Some time ago, someone said / wrote that insertes might have problems putting items on a nearly full belt, unless you use more belts to sideload stuff on it.


Can anyone say, if the right layout is better than the left one (once there are enough smelters) for maximum throughput ?

Belt merging is slightly better than inserters, but neither will give max compression. The only way to achieve max compression is feed 2 half-full belts into a splitter and output 1 belt.
