Boilers efficient usage

Post by monty »

This is aimed to share my understanding and observations on boilers.

There is a general discussion about how much(heating) or many(numbers) are enough for effective heating.Generally since this discusion only took place for vanilla boilers and generator, the result was all but constant. Usage of pumps or any other device (tank for storage of surplus heated water) was highly optional.

But now with the variety in all these fields(boilers, generator, pumps and storage tanks(which now need a pump to draw things out of them)), a discussion is due on this topic.

Firstly , a boiler can never delive more power than its rating. I have stated this now(despite it being so basic and obvious) because in my discussion you might hit the line where you are compelled to believe otherwise.
Secondly, boilers heating is a time constant phenomenon ,if one tick is lost without heating, it will not be added to another.
There are 60 ticks in 1 sec, and a boiler with 60 KW rating essentially adds 1 KW per tick.Once this is lost, it will never be regained(no transfer effect)
Thirdly, the kind of pipe being used and the amount of boiler volume have an impact on the heating efficiency.

The basic demand is to gain 2 things,
1)to get all of boiler energy(its power) consumed.
2)To get maximum energy transferred to generators .

The first aims at avoiding wastage of available power. this requires a minimum volume inside the boiler.
The second is to ensure we get an appropriate flow rate. This will maximize power delivered to the energy grid.

When one is increased, flow rate decreases, and net power delivered is capped.
When second is increased, max flow rate is gained, but boilers may be starved.

An effective trade off can be made, ensuring maximum power generation and power transfer.

to start off, here is a situation where we can get a hang of things
Trade off
For better boiler setup and increasing the flow ,parallel boiler setup can be used. The parallel setup has same core line (base line, between source and generator) and different branched. This splits and adds the flow rate by a very large fraction, increasing the effectiveness of boilers
Parallel setup
This will give you a slight idea about the usage of flow in favor to maximize the power generated.
