I need help, how do you make factorio exciting again after the first time you do something? I want to start over again but don't want to redo the automation and research process again.

I'm sure you'll find a way to do everything better the second time around.

and the third, and the tenth ....

In factorio, you make with every new game a new factory. Trying out other ways of perfection. etc etc.

There is no way around the resarch and automation to do anew every time you start a new game.

To make new games unequal to an old game you can intall a (or some) mod(s).

But (if you like it) you can use the console to learn all recipes and to give you all items you want.
But since in my personmal meaning this is cheating I have not looked for the commands.

I'm not bored after my 12 first games, averaging 30-40 hours each.
When I'll start being bored, I'll try big mods that add new content like Dytech, Yuoki, ... The replay value of Factorio is tremendous :)

I started over a few times myself and made the factories bigger and more efficient and still learner better and new stuff.

Also you can set certain goals for like getting an X amount of an item or play with the settings in the New map menu like making the ore frequency really low so you are forced to learn to handle trains and stuff (I myself like that setup because I'm not good with trains yet) or have a map with only an height of 20tiles or have more and bigger spawners. There a lot of other options still that are possible, just search the forums a bit and get new inspiration, I'm sure ;) .

Also I have a list in my head, of when I get bored with my current map, to do other settings or start using big mods like Bobmod or Dytech but first I need to get bored with my current map

Research: If you do not want to repeat the research-cycle every time you start a new game you can also go sandbox.

Fun: What keeps me interested and playing is that there is to me no fixed end-game I want to reach. Researching the technology to its fullest is just a station on my loooooooooooooong way towards that ever elusive goal of having things run exactly as I want them to AND look good doing so ;) But if you are more goal-oriented then you could always tighten the screws more and more for each playthrough so that it becomes increasingly harder to reach the moment when you can finally build your rocket defense.

As Phillip_Lynx, Koub and Jhonny say, there are also any number of mods that can massively change your gameplay ... take a look and see what's interesting (or if you complain long enough about a certain topic, someone will tell you how to fix that problem with a mod ... worked for me ;) ).

If you enjoy teamwork, there is a multiplayer option and you can check out the topic in this forum.

And while you're at it why not watch some of the truly excellent videos on youtube? I am always amazed and awed (hehe, to say nothing of humbled) when I see what some people come up with.

Enjoy ...

This is indeed what keeps me playing. Doing better. Better, more efficient layouts.

And also multiplayer, with a couple of friends. Evolve makes connecting up super easy.

you know what? I think I will attempt a few other setups. after all, factorio is about building a factory and experimenting until you get the most efficient setup.

Welp, after a few hours of experimentation, I found the problem, it wasn't that it was bugged, it was that my steam engine didn't have enough things to power so the boilers turn off and the steam engine stays on and produces 3-4 KW, just enough to power my inserters, not enough to overload all the power lines and inserters.

if that could happen in factorio :P
