I have placed burner mining drills on top of iron ores. I expect iron ore. Not something else.

I get iron ores when I manually pick up drilled items. But when I use a burner inserter, I see coal being produced instead of iron. I think this is a bug.

Is this anyhow expected behaviour?

That sounds like the burner inserters are pulling coal from the burner mining drills fuel inventory. You can't pull things from miners using inserters - they automatically output mined items.
