Why are random unconnected chunks revealed?

Does anyone know why random chunks might get revealed sometimes, and then disappear again after a few seconds? Is this some kind of effect of the Radar's long range survey scanning, or something else?

Ah, thanks! Just if anyone else finds this on Google, I missed this quote from the
wiki article:
> Long range scanning is visible on the map as a single chunk lighting up for several seconds, then slowly darkening.
