So I've been playing Space Age a lot, and one of the things that really grinds my gears is the fact that only 50 mags can fit in a 1-ton capacity rocket?
I get that we're going for game balance here to encourage other modes of destroying asteroids, but isn't there some other way we could do that?

A full 30-round mag of .223 weighs almost exactly 1lb (470g). Surely a rocket can ship more than 50lbs / 25kg of ammo??

Like you said, balance reasons.
You can solve this issue by crafting the ammo directly on the ship, in fact that's the reason to get the chunk reprocessing technologies, so you can also get cooper from the metallic asteroid chunks in order to craft red ammo or even rockets with later tech.
Of course, you can also ship the ammo fron the surface, thats your decission. Personally I first though this cargo limitation was awful, but later I found that it is a good way to encourage you to go big with your base and the moment you do it, you will have no more problems with items being sent.

1 rocket * 400 steel / 1 = 400
2 rockets * 1000 iron / 4 = 500
2 rockets * 1000 copper / 5 = 400
So:
5 rockets of ingredients = 400 Piercing rounds + 100 extra iron
5 rockets of Piercing rounds = 250 Piercing rounds only

There's also the question of when red rounds are even worth it over yellow rounds...

Magazines are 10 rounds and also feed turrets and vehicle machine guns. They also stop big mean alien bugs in a way 5.56 would struggle with. Some quick math gives a mass of 2kg per round, so I'm guessing they're some kind of light cannon round in the 20-40mm range.
