e.g. when you research "Automation 3" or "Lab research speed 4". It's difficult enough until then and in principle almost done. This might also go for some other achievements.

What does lab research 4 have to do with it?

The point of Lazy Bastard is to encourage the player to automate everything. Yes you can drop an assembler down and use that but it's tedious and you can't run around with it working, so you want to get an automated supply of everything ASAP and continue using those automated supplies until the end.

Once you have automation 3 I fail to see why the achievement should end just because you've reached the easy part, this is the bit that forces you to consider logistics and appropriate levels of production and such.

You do realize that the difference between success and failure is an "almost" :).

Its already one if the easiest achievments.
Dont see why they should change it.

Half the problem with lazy bastard is people trying to get it not being lazy enough.

Or patient enough. The early game in particular needs quite a bit of patience to be successful without wasting extra craft cycles.

Once you have things up and running enough to get the logistics network online, finishing it becomes trivial. The logi bots will bring you whatever it is you need so you don't have to go get it anymore.

Also to be considered: How people set up their factories can have a lot of effect on how easy it is to expand the factory for other products.

For instance, if you set things up so that the labs are entirely self contained, requiring only Iron, Copper, and Petroleum Gas and you make it harder to produce other products automatically as you have to set up whole new generalized production zones, rather than having resources that go to the labs also going to other production.

Strategy is important.

The only thing I dislike with lazy bastard achievement is how you have to rush automation lvl 2, because you can't automate anything with automation lvl 1 : Assembling machine 1 needs 3 ingredients, but accepts only 2.
Burner mining drill needs 3 items too. So you can't automate even a coal operated early factory. So it's all about running around and getting things into other things manually, changing recipes in your single assembling machine to build two of this and three of that. When you reach automation 2, you can at last automate everything.

Pretty much this ^

It is also actually against the idea of the achievement because one has to work really hard and long to be able to automate things. And even with Automation 2 getting to the point you do not run constantly around changing recipes and moving stuff personally is still lots of manual work. So there is actually very little "laziness" to this achievement.
