I was monitoring my power usage and I noticed that my steam engines seem to only produce the minimal amount of power necessary to run my factory and their power production drops off when my solar panels kick in. Before I researched accumulators, when I would become under attack the laser turrets would spike my power needs and momentarily create some production lag in parts of my factory while my steam engines would catch up to my needs.

Without accumulators, there is no place to store excess energy so the engines generate just what's needed. That's the whole point of accumulators.
