Steam Engines should not produce pollution

Think about it realistically for a second. Why would a steam engine produce pollution?
Should the boiler pollute? Sure, you burn coal. Should a theoretical oil engine produce pollution? Sure, big time. But there's no real reason for the steam engine to produce pollution.

Well, they do not produce any pollution right now.

I agree fully. The only problem I see is the "realistically". At the end of the day it's a game and realism shouldn't matter at all as long as the gameplay mechanics are fun.

The color of the "steam/smoke" should look different, yes. Nothing important yet.

Pollution in the game is treated as a magic number that attracts biters, not necessarily as actual pollution. That's why assembling machines pollute.

My bad, always thought Steam Engines are major polluters due to the amount of smoke the produce (It should be white, and fade faster then
)
Also, now that we really have some different types of fuel, it may be interesting to have different fuel burn produce different pollution. (For example, in the future maybe we'll be able to tap into noble gas pockets and burn them with minimal pollution).

Gas storage and burning for energy production would be a cool addition.

Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Engines are noisy and hot. Why shouldn't they pollute?

Because noise is not spreading like wind? The idea is ok, but air pollution is something completely different than noise.

Steam engines produce noise pollution. No one has defined what type of pollution machines emit.
