How to do factorio graphics?

I have some understanding of code/how factorio works but i don't know with what to create grapics? :cry:
Someone knows a good free software that i could use?

Blender is the free 3D software that I see modders using http://www.blender.org/

I imagine there is a way to develop sprites with 3DS Max, but I haven't dabbled enough to figure it out yet.

Sketchup is a easer way to create graphics but dose not achieve the finish of blender.

You can also go ahead and try to draw on the graphics directly, with a graphics program.
I think blender is a lot more complicated for small stuff. :)
