English/German cannon shells

It is about the original English names, not translation, but I am not sure to put this here or which subsection of forum.

There are four types of cannon shells by now (0.16.51). Their current names are cumbersome and not the best, and are making translations (which are based on English) not looking nice.
Currently in English,

Code: Select all

cannon-shell=Cannon shell
explosive-cannon-shell=Explosive cannon shell
uranium-cannon-shell=Uranium cannon shell
explosive-uranium-cannon-shell=Explosive uranium cannon shell
People made the following German translations based on English...

Code: Select all

cannon-shell=Kanonengeschoss
explosive-cannon-shell=Explosives Kanonengeschoss
uranium-cannon-shell=Uranversetzte Kanonenmunition
explosive-uranium-cannon-shell=Explosive Uran-Panzergranate
If the four shells are named after their characteristics, and using existing terms in the real world military, they may look better. (And make translations based on English all better.)
Here are my suggestions:
  • The two shells with good piercing power: Armor-piercing shell or AP shell in short.
  • The two shells with area damaging power: High-explosive shell or HE shell in short.
So we will have the following English strings: (I am not sure whether to keep the word "cannon" here, I am open-minded to it.) As Pi-C pointed out, I keep the word "cannon" in strings.

Code: Select all

cannon-shell=Armor-piercing cannon shell
explosive-cannon-shell=High-explosive cannon shell
uranium-cannon-shell=Uranium armor-piercing cannon shell
explosive-uranium-cannon-shell=Uranium high-explosive cannon shell
And so I would suggest the following German strings: (which is then direct translation of English strings, and is also much cleaner and concise.)

Code: Select all

cannon-shell=Panzergranate
explosive-cannon-shell=Sprenggranate
uranium-cannon-shell=Uran-Panzergranate
explosive-uranium-cannon-shell=Uran-Sprenggranate

cannon-shell=Armor-piercing (cannon) shell

uranium-cannon-shell=Uranium armor-piercing (cannon) shell
explosive-uranium-cannon-shell=Uranium high-explosive (cannon) shell
I definitely would stick to "cannon shells" as long as there also are shotgun shells. Might be too ambiguous otherwise. :-)

Sure, I am adjusting my first post accordingly.
