The key mapping for 0.17.40 is not working for closing windows if set to TAB. Remapping it to e.g. "Keypad -" works.
The following issue has emerged sometime after 0.17.36.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR
GIVEN
A key mapping "TAB" for "Close window" option in the Control settings
and
A key mapping "TAB" for "Open character screen" option in the Control settings

WHEN
Pressing TAB on an empty screen has opened character screen and mouse is hovering the character screen

THEN
Pressing TAB again should close the opened character screen

I actually started getting the same issue when I upgraded to 0.17.40 with a mod, where I have the UI for the mod bound to open/close on Tab. It opens on tab, but doesn't close when I hit it again, like it did on 0.17.39.

Downgrading to 0.17.39 worked for me.

It's conflicting with the "Confirm Message" key.
Caused by this fix. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=67182
I reverted the fix and instead disallowed binding mouse shortcuts to that key.

So it's fixed in Version: 0.17.42.

Works fine for me. Do you have other special keybindings related to TAB?
Can you send me your config.ini so I can try it with your set of key-binds? Thanks.

The problem was that I was trying to see if the problem was related to my personal settings so I remapped it to a rando character. I don't know why the un-remapping didn't happen, but the issue is fixed for me now. Sorry for the additional time spent
