Error loading sprites

I just bought the game after playing the demo without any trouble, but now the full game won't start:

I'm running Windows 8.1 in parallels under Mac OS Yosemite.
I've tried the 64 bit and 32 bit version.

I just reinstalled the demo and it's working like a charm.
Then I reinstalled the full game and it's not working again.

The problem seems to be the installer. I used the zip package and now it's working.

That is strange, that might have something to do with some special access rights configuration.

I usually see that error message when I run out of graphics RAM

Yes, I was also thinking that. So I tried installing in C:/temp/ but it did not help. Then I tried manually assigning extra rights to the folder, but it did not seem to help. I also tried running the game as administrator.

I upped my VRAM from 512MB to 1024MB and it seems to work now. Isn't that a lot?

Not really, I'm afraid that 512Mb ram is starting to be not enough for factorio in default mode.

I am affected by the same Bug.
None of the versions i tried (except the Demo) works.
I tried the 32/64 bit Versions both Installer and Zip.
Note that the Path is completely bogus:

Where do all thoese fancy | and / come from?
However just restarting the game over and over again will eventually load it.
Maybe that is some problem with slow hard drives, low ram and threading?

I had this problem too, and i struggled with it for quite a while. First of all, get your factorio saves (%appdata%/Factorio). The folder is simply called saves. Copy that, so it wont get deleted. When you have done that, uninstall factorio. Then you download the wanted version of the game in .zip , NOT .exe . Then open the dot zip, and you should find a file that starts with factorio, and then some numbers/letters. Just copy that into %appdata%. Then open it and put your saves into it. Then go into bin, win32/64 and start the game!
