Don't think they are related to cliffs; I'm playing on a world upgraded from 0.15, so no cliffs.

But it is late on in the game and I have a lot of turrets, and biter attacks are frequent.

Started a new game (16.17) and aggro'd some biters and dragged them round cliffs and all was fine...

A save is attached where bugs attack and it crashes ~10s in.

It sure feels like it's related to cliffs, but maybe not...

EDIT: If I go near those biters when they attack, it seems to not crash.

EDIT2: It seems to crash as soon as the biters enter turret range, even if I disconnect power. If I remove the turrets themselves, it does not crash.

I too have a save, started in .16.16, that there is a coming attack at a cliff, if I do anything to prevent the path the biters are taking the crash doesn't happen, even if I just get them to chase me a tiny bit so they go around the cliff no crash once they reach turret range. I then can play for quite a while without issue, each time a crash happens I go back to the autosave, figure out where the crash is and get the biters away from the cliff when they get into turret range and no more crash.

I have gotten to the point of just using cliff explosives to get rid of any cliffs within turret range and haven't had a crash since.

The game crashed for me as well, though it was well over a minute into the game at the time. Possibly 5 minutes in but it's hard to keep track of time when playing Factorio. :roll: At the time I was in the middle of placing a blueprint and it was partially constructed. I may have accidentally left-clicked on one of the ghost factories. I went back into my save and tried to duplicate what I did, but that didn't seem to cause the issue to re-occur. I add the following to my control.lua as a test.

[16.17] Crash during biter attack

I appear to have a similar crash. Running 16.17 vanilla, game crashes during a biter attack to the top left corner of my base. No turrets are engaging the biters, they are just destroying some furnaces.
Unsure if the autosave was trying to run; I have mine set to every 10 minutes.

I guess I won't report my crashing issue then.

Though, for me, it seemed to be with certain patches of biters. I could run in and take them out, but then driving my train with my plasma cannons installed on the grid past certain areas, the biters would attack and the game crash.

I didn't know exactly what was causing it, and couldn't pinpoint it with any accuracy to save just before hand, but it does sound like the crash happens when biters or spitters enter a certain range of my railway line (Which is plastered with turrets, so if there is an issue with crashes when biters enter a turret range, that could be the cause of my issues)

Either way, I'll wait until 0.16.18, then try again.

Can Confirm Bitter Attacks with my Crash as well didn't realize it was duplicate till someone posted while I was uploading the save file..Decided it wasn't necessary if the crash was that common. is a hotfix coming soon and will it crash on a new game started in 16.17?

I had a crash (my first in 1364 hours of playtime, woo!) on 0.16.17 last night. My guess is that it's the same problem as has already been fixed, but I'd rather post and let someone more qualified judge. I think the last autosave (attached) was quite some time before the crash, unfortunately. In the meantime I had probably played with splitter filtering somewhat (fiddled with settings on existing splitters, set them back to normal, built a new splitter and belts to play with, then cleaned that all up too), then I manually artillery-shelled a few biter bases to the north and west. The crash happened when a particularly huge swarm of aliens was approaching the walls, could well have been as they came into turret range but I'm not sure. I don't remember exactly where they arrived but I think it was the north-west corner where I now see there's a cliff just outside turret range - so it definitely fits with what else has been reported here. But here's the log and the last autosave just in case. I wasn't able to reproduce the crash when I tried again unfortunately - possibly the biters chose to head somewhere else, maybe a different artillery turret fired at them.
