If you click the Back button in the save menu, the game saves. If you compare playtime count and the message "Saving map" it does actually save. I have tried with 2 of my mods and with no mods, this behavior always repeats.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Play -> Load game -> Click a previous save and Click Load
2. Now you are in-game, wait for 5 or more seconds -> press Esc and click Save game
3. In the Save UI, make sure to have a save selected -> Click Back button

Expected result: Returns to main menu and does nothing else

Actual result: The game saves into the selected slot and returns to in-game

This was a PSA for me, so I'm worried to play and accidentally overwrite other saves, and rather than make multiple backups every time I play, I'll just wait to play until it's fixed
