Some weapons (shotgun and a pistol) have a number 1 next to them (i suppose to indicate that they are single items), while submachine gun does not have any numbers. Screenshot:

Does it change if you change the active weapon?

Nope. Submachine gun still doesn't show any numbers, while other weapons do.

To add up. Did a bit more testing and I think I know why it is the case. It is possible to have several shotguns in one slot (like 2 shotguns take up 1 slot), while submachine gun cannot do that. So that is why submachine gun is always 1, so the number does not show up, while I can have 2 shotguns as one item at the same time.

Does it increase fire power to have more in one slot?

This is because of the stack size. You have multiple weapons in one slot. Right click to remove one of them.
Pretty sure anyhow.

Does not seem to be the case. Same amount of damage and same rate of fire.

That is true. I can have several shotguns/pistols in one slot, but not a submachine gun. So why can I do that? Isn't it logical to either let BOTH submachine gun and a shotgun have stack size of 5 or BOTH shotgun and submachine gun have stack size of 1. This looks like a very minor issue, but I decided to report anyway.

The stack size for the submachine gun was only 1,
I have set it to 5, which is the same as all other guns

Shouldn't all the guns be 1 instead? Unlike, well, tools, or Ammo, or placeable items, they do not have quantity or durability issues, such that having more than one is useful. The only place where two guns would be useful is in a mod where you have two types of ammo for the same gun, and have two of the same gun with each ammo, since you want to be able to switch between ammo types quickly. Vanilla has no reason for stacking weapons.

Maybe firing a gun should result in durability loss in the same way as the pickaxe? I imagine they would degrade slower than a pickaxe, though.
Also, I haven't checked to see if this functionality already exists, but maybe it could be possible to repair a pickaxe or gun with the repair toolkit, in case you forgot to bring a spare shotgun to the fight, for eg.
