You ran out of bullets. Not a bug.

It happens to me sometimes too. Not for lack of ammo and not in melee contact. Like pacifist you swing your pick in air to shoo creeps away.

I use default keys. And melee attack should only trigger when close to aliens, right? It happens too far away sometimes.

It also happens to me, I have bullets... It happened in various situation, two that came out more often is : when there are too close to me and when we just have the laboratory between me and the creepers...
By the way, I am playing on a mac, I do not know if it plays a role in it, but since the bug did not occur with you guys, this might be an explanation... (I doubt it, but, just in case, I mention it !!!).

Did you have your mouse cursor near any of the creepers? The automatic targeting only seems to work if your cursor is within about 10 squares of the target. This used to happen to me a lot until I figured this out.

Good to know, since I am playing a lot with my trackpad, I might not have had the mouse in the right direction !!!

it happens to me as well on windows 8
seems related to where the pointer is; if it crosses a resource or the inventory bar a pick swing starts.
space is only assigned to shooting.

Good description of the problem. Actually we noticed this from one of the youtube videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psvemac6Axw happened around 6:00. We have fixed this in 0.2.8. The behavior will be:
- If there is a gun with ammo active then try to find an enemy within distance of 10 from the cursor.
- If there is a gun with ammo active but no such enemy then try to find an enemy in distance 5 from the player.
- If there is no gun with ammo active and pick is equipped then attack the enemies within distance of 1.5 with a pick.
Hope this spares you some frustration.

Yeah, I think this will help me, especially in the early part of the game when my lab keeps being destroy because I am unable to kill creepers !!!
