Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

But as a little mea culpa, I really should drop the sarcastic "fair's fair" routine. The truth is that it's in everyone's best interest if I stop caring about what someone wants when they make it clear that they will not reciprocate.

The more you know.β„’

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

Come on man, that is uncalled for. Although it is an interesting idea, it is one I do not agree with either. Better to be nice than be like that to others who have different opinions. Constructive conversations are the point of these forums, not to act like children. I would prefer to leave the arm...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

2) Armor can be swapped to provide different bonuses, for example the combat armor with many shields and personal defense and the builder armor with 2 roboports and exoskeletons. Oh noes. The tiniest subset of players who care enough to have a whole two module loadouts would find their game experie...

Fixing NPE - Full Burner Start

Extension of this thread where the problem with the burner phase was brought up. The problem with Factorio's beginning is that it gives the player a critically flawed and incomplete toolset in regards to burner powered buildings. A new player starts with burner buildings so that the simplest power m...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

The attitude of mods for thee and vanilla for me is exactly backwards. Vanilla should be designed as a well-rounded experience in that it has gameplay aspects that appeal to a variety of player types. Mods are for focusing on and expanding out niche aspects to more specifically cater to a smaller su...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

Time for me to take yet another tact. Dude, I appreciate everything you've written so please don't take this as criticism, but rather an opportunity to learn. It's "take yet another tack". It's a sailing term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacking_(sailing) :) Your post about Puzzle play ...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

Time for me to take yet another tack. I'm a player from the Experience camp, which is on the side of the Puzzle Player camp farthest away from the Power Player camp. I don't use bots, so I spend a fair bit of time mining out trees and rocks by hand. This is part of the experience for me, and was onc...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

To make the pickaxe thing as blunt as possible: A pickaxe is a tool that is meant to help you do something. It's not an end unto itself. Crafting a pickaxe first thing is telling the player that you craft things to achieve a separate goal in Factorio. But crafting a building first thing says that ma...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

...So again, nice swan song for a way that never really was in Factorio. But tech updates immediately in Factorio, and with that the last remnant of a justification for the useless pickaxe in the user interface is gone as well. I made it quite clear why the pickaxe isn't useless. It's a teaching me...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

I think the start with burner stuff is backwards in sense of game mechanics, where the burner stuff designs is more complex to setup than electric stuff. The game should go from simple -> complex. On the other hand it makes sense in a thematic way. Not entirely accurate. The point of burner tech is...

Re: The Problem With Pickaxes - Digging Out Factorio's Core

To take this the final step - your factory is your labs and your labs are your tech tree. Wube has used the tech tree as a crutch for so long that they stumbled into using it to try and fix everything and thus be everything. Making the pickaxe a research powerup is the next step in this transition. ...

And here's the promised thread unto itself on pickaxes.

I may have gotten a bit too poetic, but it gets the point across.

The Problem With Pickaxes - Digging Out Factorio's Core

First, some necessary background. This is a response to FF#266 - Cleanup of Mechanics where it was announced that the pickaxe was being axed, as in, no longer an equipment option but a researchable powerup that just happens at research completion. The forum discussion crystallized the need to say wh...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

The problem with this is, that the devs will be more likely to completely remove the burner stage than to extend it. I love having the option for using burner stuff so much, that i forked Klonan's BurnerLeech . But there is probably a reason, the burner stage is incomplete and you are forced into e...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

"Cutting is shipping." - you have to cut down features without mercy to deliver a polished product. Right now the benchmark for me would be a satisfying campaign. That is the game that's being shipped. The multiplayer/sandbox parts are extra. That's how I would see it right now. Sure, but...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

Burners and stone furnaces and then AM1 are exciting first steps on the long road to automation - although AM1 should be burner-powered , there should be burner labs , and electricity should be a much greater challenge . ... Factorio needs another tier of miners and smelters before bots. The miners...

Re: Friday Facts #266 - Cleanup of mechanics

Because I have a feeling, and it'd be helpful to understand the problem Factorio is having here... Assembling Machine tiers are puzzle tiers. Gray tier vs Blue vs Green. The ingredient limits tied to color tied to tech level told both the player and Wube what level of puzzle complexity they were dea...
