Yeah I think that is the right direction. As a precondition we need the extremley fast routing algorithms, which is also needed for the robots. That is eventually also the reason, why we don't have automated ships yet.

... anyone who wants to know. These things are anything but efficient because of the efficiency loss involved in each link. But they hurt boss alien ships real good and make them explode almost instantly. That would be really ridiculous.

... got killed somehow. Or previous (failed) attempts at colonizing the planet may have left remnants. Especially if it is a dangerous planet. Space ships crash all the time and not everybody makes it back. It could be like a shipwreck island. Hey, don't even have to be crashed HUMAN ships...
