Indeed, placing a signal not only gives the train a signal the upcomming track is clear, it also marks that part of the track as 'one way'. Why would anyone need an excuse to play with trains?
Just trying to create a complicated rail network is a game in itself, although I hope 0.9 gives us a bit more ways to control the trains

This is from my test track. These stations have the same name, and trains pick a station that's free when they cross the last signal before the rail-split. Works perfectly

I agree with the first two missions, although basic train-ing is fairly simple once you know how to put fuel in the train. You don't need signals for this mission.
