Re: Friday Facts #88 - Combinators

I've been thinking about the "Decider Combinator" (with the output set to "Input Count" and operator set to '<'), wondering if it could somehow be used to latch arbitrary values (by toggling the 2nd input between MIN_INTEGER and MAX_INTEGER), but I'm not exactly seeing an easy s...

Re: Water capacitor

Here's the power output from full to empty with no input. Excited for 0.12 so I can hook up a sensor to the tanks to alert me when I'm using more water than I'm producing...Should have a nice buffer so I never have an outage, even in case of a biter attack. curve.PNG Anyway, I will finally let this ...

Re: Friday Facts #88 - Combinators

I would love to see a little red/green light on the decider combinators. Green when the condition is true, red when false (aka not outputting a signal). This would make it really easy to look at a large combinator array and determine it's status.

Re: Thoughts about Combinators

What I would love to see for the multicolored lights; a single row at the bottom of the combinator window with something like: If (Input A) (Iron Ore) >603, Light (Green); else light (red); With each item in parenthesis being a drop-down menu. Each combinator would then have a single light on it, wi...

Re: My Iron and Copper system, with buffer

I think buffer's are incredibly useful. Especially on smelting setups. If you need a reason to actually consider it, are trains 100% consistent output? Or periodic output? (Buffers are great for handling periodic inputs/outputs) - Monk This is very true, I do use buffers for loading and unloading t...

Re: My Iron and Copper system, with buffer

I love buffer systems because they are real things. Like imagine, you are doing science, science, science, science, and then stops doing some science because you forgot to research the next thing. Now imagine you only had 70% effective production because of a bit of resource shortage (which again i...

Re: My Iron and Copper system, with buffer

Buffer systems are highly overrated. True mastery of this game (and life) comes from balance. With balance one can achieve enlightenment. Seek balance, and avoid things which mask balance, such as buffer systems and storage tanks. Just some advice from somebody that has played this game for thousan...

Re: Water capacitor

Gave it another go, please let me know what you think. First off the electricity use, starting from fully filled. The final production shows the baseline created by the in-flow of 240 UOL/s: electrogram3.PNG Here's the overview: Final Overview.PNG And the tanks themselves... Tanks.PNG Was this more ...

Re: Water capacitor

So I realized that while building a water capacitor that only turns on at night is a neat idea, it really doesn't meet the design goals here.... I have another idea that I'm working on now that will hopefully work a bit better. Sorry, I didn't mean to kill this thread, I think I got a little over-ex...

Re: Water capacitor

That's why I included the pumps, every one of those engines is operating at max capacity at night. Additionally, if you hook up your bases main power supply to the central electric pole (instead of the two solar panels) this setup becomes an on demand power supply, useful for bug attacks. When your ...

Re: Water capacitor

This thing has been so much fun to build, thanks for the inspiration ssilk. :) Here's my final design. The left plateau shows array power generation when the tanks are empty, the right shows that when the tanks fill up the overflow is converted into additional power. (A few solar panels thrown in fo...

Re: Water capacitor

Here's what I came up with. FinalDay.PNG During the day the solar panels power the small pumps and prevent water from getting to the lonely steam engine, which in turn prevents any water from flowing to the engine array by deactivating the small pumps above it. At night the solar panels die, the eng...

Re: Oil collection - train or pipe?

Did we mention water? Draining a thousands tile long pipe is... "Load Savegame" What do you mean about water? If you accidently hookup water to your 10000000 long oil pipe... you're going to have a bad time. Crude barrels prevent that, and keep your oil clean and ready to use. Crude barre...

Re: Silly thoughts about Science Packs

Well, knowledge goes into making tools right? So clearly they are distilling the pure knowledge back out of these devices. More complex input yields a more pure product, denoted by reflecting a higher wavelength of light (red-->green-->blue-->purple). Perfect sense. :)

Re: Water capacitor

ssilk The water capacitor design you're showing has a lot of potential, as hot water storage is extremely efficient, but it has a few flaws. First off a few basic facts about the factorio fluid transport system. -It runs on a "distance from source system", with offshore pumps and small pum...
