Re: Friday Facts #327 - 2020 Vision

20/20 is nothing exceptional, unless you're old, especially with correction : Exactly! If I have 20/20 vision, it means I can see at 20 feet what the "average" person can see at 20 feet. When I was young, I had 30/20 vision (far-sighted), meaning I could see at 30 feet what the average pe...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

I did something similar, here it is : (it's pretty crude though - and don't forget about multiple sheets) Yay! thank you for sharing your spreadsheet! (Did I mention I love spreadsheets?) Sadly I could not figure out what your spreadsheet is doing. Perhaps I should mention that I worked as an audit...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

If someone hasn't made a spreadsheet for it, they should: Yes! I love spreadsheets! For me, it is pretty easy to figure out how many tanks you need, once you know how much steam you need. And once you know how much time you need the steam to last, it is pretty easy to figure out how much steam you ...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

Honestly, the solution is probably in a different direction than where you’re looking. You are describing my solution 3, to figure out how much steam I need to have on hand, and store that much. I do understand that it is the standard solution. I am a non-standard kind of person so it doesn't appea...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

it is always better to run more reactors. Very true, so if I am running a sector, all the reactors in the 2x4 array are running; all the inserters are wired together so when one loads, they all load. The question was if it was better to run all 11 of my sectors even if I didn't need that much power.

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

Options I have come up with so far: Changing cycle times. Say the current problematic situation has my reactors going through the cycle in 10 units. Changing the number of tanks, or the steam level, on a per sector basis, in effect changes the cycle time. So I might end up with one cycle time of 10,...

Any day when you learn something new is a good day, or, still yet another different way to run out of power by Amarula  I am sharing this in the hopes it may help someone else not run into this problem; or at least you can get a good chuckle because I keep finding new ways to run out of power ...

Re: Self Resetting Timer

I have a variation on the timer to share. This one is a count down timer: Count down timer.png For actual use, the inserter would be inserting science packs from the chest into a lab rather than another chest, but this is the setup I used to create and debug. The use case is wanting to know when I a...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

All my nuclear plants are now upgraded (thank you again disentius); 10K fewer pipes and 5K fewer underground pipes, my UPS thanks you! No issues with heat exchangers out of water, no issues with turbines having no steam :) Another related question: is it better to run more reactors than you really n...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

look at the consumption ( never look at the fluid amount) Ah! thank you for pointing that out. Hmmm.... so if the heat exchangers are actually getting water (just using it all), I am back to wondering why my power production is now worse... it must be that the steam isn't getting to the turbines. I...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

Have you checked heat excanger temperature? Good thing to check but nothing so logical alas. At this point the reactors are up to about 998 degrees and the furthest heat pipe was about 882. The heat exchangers on the opposite side of those heat pipes were all working as expected. As I said, it work...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

This is driving me crazy  I now have worse performance than I did before. Yes, worse. I managed to catch a picture but it isn't consistent. As you can see in the screen shot, the heat exchanger connected directly to the offshore pump has no water, and that affects the entire row. For some reas...

Re: Water supply for nuclear reactors

So far I have built/replaced 3 reactor sectors to be on the lake rather than beside the lake, and I am pretty happy with the results (600 fewer pipes, 800 fewer underground pipes). However you did warn me: with careful placement of landfill Oh boy it is hard to get the landfill placed where I need i...

Re: Small supply chain simulation code (I'm learning Java basics)

Oh this looks like fun! You already have the concept of stacks of resources. What if you passed the stack to each constructor, and let the constructor pop however many it needs, instead of popping the stack to get the resource to pass to the next constructor? So for instance instead of "new Iro...

Single side loading to underground belt

When loading on to an underground belt facing the same direction as the inserter, the load is placed on the right side of the belt as expected. However, when the underground belt is facing away from the inserter, the load is placed on the left. I had hoped to be able to use an underground belt to un...

Re: How do YOU use and manage your v0.17 hotbars?

I bump the number of quickbars hotbars shown to the maximum of four. One row is solid blueprint books. The rest is all kinds of stuff that I find useful from belts and inserters to repair packs (not to use, that is what robots are for, but so I can see if I am running out!) Some pretty much stay all...

Re: Module trade offs for Low Pollution Run.

Thanks Honktown this is very helpful... For pollution, the calculation is power ratio * pollution of building = pollution emitted. I double checked the wiki https://wiki.factorio.com/Pollution , and it says Modules that list "+x% pollution" increase pollution multiplier, not a flat polluti...
