Re: Game Save File and -Speed Related Suggestions

My recent experiments with hardware upgrade shows that UPS bottleneck is actually memory.
Replacement of a system board, to change CPU to better, while keeping same DIMMs gave just minor increase. Replacement of DIMMs to faster modules (2666 to 3600) gave noticeable progress. Unfortunately high end ...

Re: Space Age: will different planets be on different threads?

I still think that should be an option for surfaces to be able to run in parallel threads. It may limit some operations and make them work a bit differently then now, but current implementation, as I got it, do not represent surfaces like some distant places with limited connectivity. Since there a ...

Space Age: will different planets be on different threads?

Currently mega bases are limited by UPS, single processor core performance. I always thought that the limit is somewhere far, but after building a mega base, even with almost no mods, I already got to the point, when FPS/UPS drops below 60 on average gaming PC. One CPU core running at 100% while ...

Re: Game Save File and -Speed Related Suggestions

So "fast save without pause" is hardly achievable in current game design, due to large amount of data, that has to be copied, from current game data state, until next tick is going to be calculated. And there is no easy solution, if any at all, as I understand it.

That's probably a feature of all ...

Re: Game Save File and -Speed Related Suggestions

Do you mean, that actual data serialization and compression takes about 1 second +, even if we skip all file operations and write to disk part of task?

I use typical Windows 10, not Linux, since it's the only choice that support all PC games. So can't check is that faster or no.

Re: Rebuild or Restart?

As long as biters do not wipe your base completely you can always continue. I think it's more fun. "Erase and rewind" is not my way of playing. My main Vanilla map base currently consumes 18GW power, produce 4k SPM and was created at 0.15 beta many years ago.

Re: Game Save File and -Speed Related Suggestions

Any progress on making saves less noticeable by time consumption?

My current save just 33Mb size, still takes noticeable time to write. I think saving to disk (including file system open/close part) take major part of that time. If the game will just copy save data to a memory buffer, and then do ...

Re: Friday Facts #375 - Quality

I like the idea of quality very much! At least it's something bright and new to grind, since currently mega factory usually just aim for RPS or k SPM. It looks so interesting and new! All other Factorio following games just changing visuals, almost without any interesting innovations in the gameplay ...

Re: Distance limit: a very bad design choice

I think there is no reason to discuss range of "hand reach" again and any more. We can consider it a developer choice. For anyone who dislike existence of this limitation, there are a lot of easy choices: console commands, no physical body mode, several mods. Pick any of listed methods, that suit ...

Re: Steam achievment: No time for chitchat (finish the game within 15 hours)

Easiest way to get both achievements is a team game. About 10 players with a good map + blueprint usually can launch a rocket in a few hours, even if they are not pro speedrunners.
I planned to join such team several times, but did not completed it yet. Of all Factorio achies I miss only three: two ...

Deathworld Rampant, what is it?

I suspected it's some setting for Deathworld, but found none. Nether a mod with such name.

Re: How is "SPM" measured?

SPM == Science Per Minute
or
RPM == Rockets Per Minute

That are two typical numbers, to compare megabase productivity.
SPM is measured on consumption side, while you research, most often, mining productivity. With interval of at least 10min, better 1 hour. Or you can measure this on less interval ...

Re: Friday Facts #365 - Future plans

Factorio have two direct competitors: Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Program. And a few similar looking games that are not so fun to play. As I remember I played at least three 2.5D factorio-like games, but they are quite limited and not so fun to continue in a long run.

Both competitors are 3D ...

About saving time - could you just create image of what-you-want-to-save in memory first and then continue the game? Then compressing it and saving to disk in background without affecting gameplay?

As I remember, saves that works this way: copy save data to memory now, save later, while game ...

Re: ""Factorio 2""

My impressions about Satisfactory vs Factorio.
They both good and fun to play.
But I prefer Factorio more, because here I can build a factory more different ways. It have blueprints and bots, that allow me to build much bigger factory. There are some methods of "copy" in SatisfF but they are from ...

Re: Industrial Revolution 2 discussion

I got a problem. All mixes for alloys looks very similar.
I think their icons should be changed someway. Usually they are two components mix. Maybe it's better to use two small icons of components and some sign for mix below, around or behind them?
I mean icons should be composed similar to basic ...
