You're in good company with the signed integer cast problem, that is the reason Gandhi in Civilization is so aggressive (his aggressiveness was -1). The slow, manual start does create a certain urge to automate, something which will pay off for the rest of the game. Unless you are speedrunning it is around a percent of a map´s playtime anyway.

Laser turrets now, but power can be problematic. When the lasers fire up the inserters placing coal in the power (right when you need it most) slow right down. No, plain 100% speed and acceleration for wood and coal, there is some bonus for solid, iirc.
