Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
I don't think ramps will necessarily make this thread obsolete. Even with them there will still be size vs throughput optimisation to be had. Though perhaps not as many ways to really push throughput alone.
Maybe a throughput / tiles used metric could be useful?
If only you could floodfill ...

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
The difference from delta is that delta won't deadlock. The safe outputs needs to be after crossings, not mergers.
The extended Symmetrical Cross will only deadlock if one of the outputs becomes blocked while a train is on the junction, pathing there, and unable to repath. This can happen with ...

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
Think i moved the signals 1 tile closer. Regardless if we did that for all intersections the difference would be smaller.

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
They should be placed as close as possible.
So the safe exit block length is measured from the first rail signal that the train passes after the last chain signal it passes when going through the junction? I've done the test again, this time using that rule, and got a score of 45.4±0.5 with ...

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
I tested the Delta intersection by Hans Joachim, my setup can be seen in the attached image, and got the following results:
Set 1: 46.98
Set 2: 38.11
Set 3: 43.34
Score: 42.81 (42.8 ± 0.5 with uncertainty from https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Testbenchcontrols/faq)
I set the TPM goal to 29, and the ...

Re: Testbench for 3/4way intersections
How do you deal with intersections that have different spacings between the rails? When I use the Testbench I add curved sections of rails as necessary, with signals placed so that each colored block can fit two full wagon lengths, but think this might influence the measurements.
If it's far ...

Re: Testbench for 3/4way intersections
Completed the new testbench.
Now it can do 3 ways and its all in a scenario. No need to download save files anymore. Also it can't interfere with other mods as everything is inside the scenario. You don't need to use any other mods, but if you want you can.

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
What is the purpose of your pickiness?
Throughput.
and how is it related to previous questions? So, what is the score? Not a big difference in comparing to the original SQUAREABOUT, right?
So you posted your intersection and didn't ask for any feedback, you just wanted to share and ...

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
Since ramps are coming this topic is dead. There are no reason to design any intersections again, just these simple ramps and mergers.
That's not true at all. Ramps are huge. Just a ramp up, over one rail, and back down is 34 tiles long. The smallest useful intersection you can make with ramps ...

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
Would someone be willing to point me at an explination of how "high-throughput merges" work, and how they're different from regular merges?
It's not recommend because of the UPS cost. It's just either starting trains further back so that they merge with higher speed or combinators that makes an ...

Re: Testbench for 3/4way intersections
Ideally, now this is the last savefile on this forum. I might update it with the latest version of the mod, but no major changes are coming to the savefiles. There is a scenario in the mod, but atm it's not working quite correctly. You have to use the command /editor to get editor mode.

v5.3.3
Fixed an issue causing the bench to reset to set 1 when using set 5. Caused by the 3/4 way checker.

Re: 3 and 4 way intersections
I wonder if there is a factor for this that's worth measuring for determining whether a result is actually useful.
You need to change the tpm. It's tuned for 2-4 trains so that there is a small gap that allows other trains to go. In the picture, the left circled CC is for manually changing ...

Re: Testbench for 3/4way intersections
5.3.2
Major chage.
Now with manual mode, you can set TPM per lane and have separate trains per lane with different schedules, inventory and length. This will allow you to test any intersection with the load you want and you can replicate your own base. Now its truly an every intersection tester.
