Re: Early game auto-crafting "station"?

I've found the easiest thing is to only keep circuits and gears stocked up. You can craft inserters or most other things very fast if you have circuits and gears on hand. I keep a full stack of circuits, and three or so stacks of gears. Pipes are handy sometimes too. Even later in the game once I ha...

Re: Savegame technical suggestions

Disabled replay would be simple to add I think, and for most games it would be fine. The copy on write stuff is fairly complex. Even the 'two copies' is more complex than you might expect, and requires a possibly significant amount of extra ram for the second copy. You also double the amount of time...

They are also useful for toggling on/off steam power, or limiting flow rates through boilers.

Do you mind doing a couple more benchmarks? The nova ones are hard to compare. You can get a free 30 day trial here http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm The results should get you a cpu score near this: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-6300+Six-Core&id=1781 and gpu score near: ...

Re: Cross connected boilers, good or bad?

Whenever I've tried to chain together lots of steam engines and boilers, the flows were never even. The only solution I found was to use a small pump after or before each set of boilers, and each set of boilers should be just enough to get the water to 100C. I don't remember how many you need. 7 or ...

I realize it might not be possible for you, but please please please install your service packs and updates if at all possible! As an IT professional unpatched systems make me sad. I don't want to be sad. Service packs make your system more secure and stable, often they can improve performance somew...

Re: removing a specific resource from a belt

One thing worth mentioning about a mixed belt is that you generally want to sort EVERYTHING off the belt using smart inserters. If you just remove the steel and iron, your belt only has copper, unless the iron or steel storage fills up, then you get mixed stuff in with your copper because the smart ...

3 And The Map Generator said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 The Map Generator saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 The Map Generator called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fi...

i like my hourly production of power.. its like a heartbeat  you need more solar panels for 3k accumulators, you need around 3.5k solar panels, so have fun. Looking at the graph, it's easy to tell he actually has way more solar panels than required, compared to his current usage. You can see t...

Re: Factorio Fluid System Changes

I 'cheap' way to make the boilers more realistic would be just changing how liquids heat and cool. Currently, 1kj warms one unit of water 1 degree. That's fine when it's below 100 C. Water doesn't turn into magic when heated above 100, steam is still H20. But it takes a lot more heat to get over tha...

Re: "Furnace Attendant" tier, where do I download the scenarios ?

For installing to your other machines, just copy the whole install. I'm using the .zip version for that reason, super easy to copy to my other machines. Works nice for multiplayer as well, just a complete copy of the game for each multiplayer group I play with, so I can keep mods and versions straig...

Re: Bigger inventory research and pumps that use electricity

It would be nice if we could add armor attachments that increase our inventory/carry capacity. Exoskeleton would surely make it possible to carry more things :) That sounds great to me! Another viable option if you had the abillity to have bigger inventory research, is that you could start with an ...

Re: Performance Issues

While factorio can use more than one thread, the majority of the work is done in only one thread. So your usage is probably one core at 100%, and just a few percent on one or two other cores. Do you mind posting the FPS/UPS numbers you are getting? Low UPS is generally processor bottlenecking which ...

Look out if you have filtered cargo wagons! Wish I'd read the notes before upgrading, I should have paused all my trains.

Re: Simple way to greatly improve trains

I've read similar suggestions a few times now, but I think that we need a little more granular than train full/empty. I'm not sure how common it is, but I always dedicate 3 slots in the first cargo wagon of each train for outpost supplies: Repair packs, Lasers, Walls. The rest of the slots are set t...

And one last thing that interests me the most: why did you choose the peer2peer approach instead of some twist on client-server? I don't advocate that it's a bad choice or anything, merely would like to know the reasons (and especially gains of one over the other) - some of the reasons may be extra...

Re: Friday Facts #76 - MP inside out

Major changes from current architecture probably won't happen, nor would they be feasible. As to the hundred thousand entities, while one can't dispute their existence, I think there's only one troublesome entity in this game, and it's the more-or-less unpredictable player. Other entities are deter...

Re: [0.11.x](1.1.0) Dynamic Expansion (Feel the wrath!)

I had a chance to try this out, and I think it's great. Didn't really notice a big difference until my evolution factor hit .9 something, then every few days in game I'd get hit with some massive attacks. My base was pretty spread out, so there is a lot of wall and a lot of turrets. Only one turret ...
