... I looked at my calednar and realized that I won't manage to make the map for this competition (one evening wasn't nearly enough for it and there are higher priority things ... for example some stuff for 0.6.0 and biking ). I'll keep the idea for next time there is a competition

Well, I took a look at this, but couldn't really reproduce it even with the save. I believe it might be a result of the bug with straight lines (because it affected saving of ma generator settings) -- map generated in 0.5.1, partially explored, then loaded in 0.5.2 ... The fish placement is complete...

Well, this is technically not a bug in the game ... It's just a major user interface problem in map editor :-) The problem is, that furnaces built in map editor are neutral by default and they aren't connected to player's research. You can change this by pressing 'T' over the furnace and changing it...

We will have a starting area, even though smaller than you are mentioning, that has high probability of having all the resources and water (this already is in 0.5.1, but there will be some more tuning). I really like the second idea.
The first one, on the other hand seems pretty artificial. Why 10? Why not 11? And even having only 10 wires doesn't guarantee that the network doesn't look tangled.

Spawning in water is weird, I'll check it.
Inconsistent edges are caused by changes in the map generator between versions. Sorry about these, but there is no practical way to avoid them when changing the map generator.

Thanks for the report. There have been some small improvements in the terrain generator in 0.5.1 -- these should among other things lower the probability of being spawned on an island -- and larger changes are planned for 0.6.0, hopefully resolving the other problems you mentioned. ...and about the ...
