Re: [0.17+] Space Exploration WIP
The meteors seem to come way too often for me. In the intro I read they're supposed to be rare, but I get like 20 per in-game day, all over my factory. I first tried defending myself with 4 Meteor space defense installations (with ammo, charged full) but they don't even try to stop a single meteor. ...

Woa, I love these so much. The graphics style is different from vanilla, but that you get a glimpse halfway inside and see what it does to the materials, I love it.

all the realism doesn't matter as long as its fun and looks good, realism is just a tiny bonus. Agreed. People often go "but that's not realistic" when that is not actually the goal of a game. That said, I actually want to comment on this to say the opposite :D Namely, one of the reasons ...

Re: Wich game version runs your server?
0.17.32. We play in evenings after work and dinner. I don't want to spend time and effort every time on downloading a new zip on the server, unpacking it, renaming directories, and testing whether everything works without any changes. Then later, the upgrade becomes so large, that the bottleneck is ...

Agreed as a computer scientist as well. We know screen colors in Kelvin, too. I, too, think it's slightly too bright, but someone made a fair point that it needs to be visible during the day. Perhaps the brightness is okay, but I liked someone else's suggestion of making it less wide instead (just a...

Re: Friday Facts #309 - Controversial opinions
I think you should have to defend your railway lines, power poles, etc. but... you do have to? I'm running double or sometimes triple power lines to outposts and fix poles whenever one gets destroyed. Railways are less bad, but they destroy those too when they're scrambling near the base. Should I ...

That's ridiculous. Well, hundreds (thousands?) of people backed the game and were included in the list of default station/locomotive/radar names, but only a handful contribute in a way to get a special mention in the FFF the way Boskid did. I don't know how valuable it was to the game, but based on...

Boskid bugs, for anyone else who is interested to see the list: https://forums.factorio.com/search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=topics&author=boskid&fid%5B%5D=7&sf=firstpost I like the ideas that people posted about a honorary mention of Boskid in the game, something related to dama...

Re: Version 0.17.62
Besides the title (base-breaking) which is derogatory and should not be on the official wiki Oh, I had not considered it that way. As a software guy, a "breaking" change is just something you have to change dependencies for (your base is dependent on Factorio's recipes, and since it's an ...

Network message segment size can be configured in server-settings.json, for server providers with large enough upload bandwidth. Is this explained somewhere? I don't see info on the wiki. E.g. above how much bandwidth should you modify it? Why is it set lower by default, to lessen lag for the curre...

Re: Allow Inserters to take fuel from trains again
-1. I'm completely with the devs and mod opinion. It's only a QoL Laziness option for a good routing of items. I know it could help in exchanging the fuel to the new fuel type, but it has to many side problems you need to define and make it a complicated thing. Isn't playing Factorio QoL laziness? ...

Re: [0.17.41] Server (headless) takes multiple minutes to save the map after not having played a few days
So, I looked into it and as far as I can tell, linux will not swap out process memory fro disk cache. There is a kernel parameter called swappiness that determines whether a failed allocation will steal space by swapping out processes memory or io cache, but that seems to be the only relation I can...

Re: [0.17.41] Server (headless) takes multiple minutes to save the map after not having played a few days
the solution is to get more ram so you never swap out. That's not quite right. I could add terabytes of RAM, but as long as my server keeps reading data from hard drives that are larger than the amount of RAM (most people have more disk space than RAM), it will sooner or later swap out unused progr...

[0.17.41] Server (headless) takes multiple minutes to save the map after not having played a few days
When connecting to the headless server after not playing for a few days, the client hangs 'waiting for server to save map' for a few minutes. I suspect it's due to swapping, as I see swap usage going down until the point where the map saves. My swap space is hard drive-based, which probably exacerba...

Re: How to become admin?
Yeah it would be nice if this could be indicated somehow. I have the admins configured in my config file, like for 0.16, and the game just start up fine but I'm not an admin. Took some searching yesterday night to find that it had changed to a dedicated file (for no apparent reason).
