I would be very happy if the key binding used to open your inventory also closed that, or any other, inventory GUI.

And then I saw this post which answers the question and solves how to fix it in my save game:

I've discovered that I can create a new game, cheat a "water-pump" in, place it, and it works. Something is screwy with my save game

Probably because I've been adding mods, tweaking mod settings, etc.
