Re: Functional Blocks
I'm not familiar with Starcraft 2 but the problem you describe sounds familiar. I agree, breaking Factorio entities into hundreds of bits, some of which can be connected, sometime, with some results is probably not optimal. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that some entities (like BELTS) should ...

Functional Blocks
Combinators (love them or hate them) have a great property in that they are connectable. By connecting and configuring them properly, functional entities (of sometime great complexity) can be created. This proposal is to extend the combinator model to other (non signal ) entities. By entities, I mea...

Re: Combinator Contraptions
Nice! Glad that somebody else is thinking along those lines. As for Nobody asked for them! No base needs them! Don't be too sure about lack of need or how useful these contraptions may be. I can see a use for the greatest item finder in balancing applications (say you want to transfer items that you...

Re: Skyblock (minecraft)-like play
How about something like this. Factorio has combinators which work on signals and are connected in networks that perform certain functions. Now, imagine being able to construct networks using physical  objects (e.g motors, wheels, manipulators etc). Say you are offended by all those forests on ...

Re: RTS direction
I very much agree with Drury's post on the combat system and weapons in general. Yes, you have all those flavors but the net effect is pretty much the same. Regarding Biters. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always viewed Barbs Biters filling the role of Barbs in the CIV series. Annoying certainly. A real ...

Re: RTS direction
For what it's worth I believe that a viable RTS option is necessary in the longer run. As the Factorio user community grows and matures, there will be a substantial fraction yearning to engage in the ultimate contest. Factorio has a lot to offer, and lot to explore, but what happens when you've fina...

Counters are not boring!
Counters are Boring? Most people who have taken the time to read the wonderful Combinators 101 have realized that combinator counters are handy, useful tools that have a place in their bag of er, tools. Timers, delays, clocks, gates ,samplers, etc are easy to construct and make many types of circuit...

Combinator Bug or a Feature?
Here's the situation I came across recently. We have a simple counter (counting blues). The output goes to two lamps via red and green wires. Both lamps are set to Blue = 0. The lamp on the green wire lights on reset, whereas the one on the red, does not. What I suspect is happening, is that the sig...

Re: The most compact memory cell
Yes, I'm relatively new at this and the combinator stuff is scattered all over. Would be nice if there was a dedicated thread. Interesting design , I'll have to try it. Mine was more of a "I wonder if this will actually work". Well, it does .... Good luck with the CPU, I think there is pla...

Re: The most compact memory cell
I can beat that! (in lack of SPEED that is). Behold, a Delay Line memory (proof of concept) Needs 1 combinator per cell (+ ahem, controller) Reads and Writes at 1 tick. Access time N/2 (average)! (so 1000 cells, 500 ticks  ) But the biggest problem is I cannot think of a single viable use for it.

Very nice! I'm wandering whether switching to a different base (say 100) would work.

Booleans!
A few days ago I had a thought that it might be interesting to do some Boolean operations within Factorio. At a minimum I was hoping to be able to perform AND, OR, NOT and XOR on at least two items. Not knowing any magical, mystical ways to fool the combinators, I had to do it the hard way. Here is ...

Binary decoder
I'm trying do so some work with boo lean operations in Factorio, and of course the first thing to do is design a binary decoder. Well, this is my stab at it. The picture shows an 8 bit decoder capable of translating 0-255. Description of operation -each bit is translated by a row of 4 (except msb) c...
