I think you pretty much answered your own question. :) Also, this would prevent the assembling machines from finishing an entire stack before halting production.

Great write-up, much more detailed (and general) than mine :-) Thank you! :) •If one or more of the output belts are filled with items so that inserters can not drop items on them, the entire contraption will take a coffee break. To solve this (...) I'd just feed them back to the input belt for red...

Way to preserve the building damage when these are items and use the same progress bar as with mining axe etc. The question is, should two turrets with 1/3 hp and 1/3 hp merge into one 2/3 (this is the way pick axes work, or should they stay separated?[/list] I think they should stay separated, but...

For balance reasons I think it should not be possible to transport items, only the player.
And it should be expensive. Really expensive. Performing a teleport should not only consume loads of electricity, but also some expensive materials, eg: alien artifacts.

While I do like the idea, at the same time I don't. I fear it would make the game "too easy". Part of the charm is to manage stuff like this, in my opinion.
I'd say let's just keep our nifty UFO's and move on! :)

I find that using chests in my factory workflow only leads to problems of overstocking and siphoning resources from the wrong sides. I'm only building loops without chests now and I'm only having problems when the supply of lesser materials slows down but it rarely if ever comes to a complete halt....

I like the idea!
It allows the player to kinda "spec" in a direction, without limiting them like a player class would. I'd love to see this implemented.
