Re: Factorio SpeedRunners and Videos
Aesthetics, yeah not so much, but symmetry and simplicity absolutely. If you look at the various game modes, wave defense, rocket rush, deathworld, they are all speedruns of a sort. deathworld is really good that way, I think. It's like speedrun or die (though there are hacks around that) Likewise, ...

Re: Factorio SpeedRunners and Videos
Sure, you're not interested in discussing ways to grow the community. That's fine. Let me just say that there are ways to promote oneself without being intrusive, however.
Let me repeat my question though, do you enjoy optimizing your builds? That is a primary speedrunning activity.

Re: Factorio SpeedRunners and Videos
Sure, it's not for everyone. But to say it's not relevant, is to ignore the evidence.
Let me ask you though, do you enjoy optimizing your builds? That's a primary speedrunning activity, tweaks to support it, would also support your game play.

Re: Factorio SpeedRunners and Videos
I think this is basically a discussion about how the game is played by most people, what's interesting to watch, what invites us to purchase the game, and importantly- how to better leverage for community growth, the Twitch/YouTube streaming of games. For those downplaying speedrunning, you're makin...

Factorio SpeedRunners and Videos
This is a somewhat long post, but it's a discussion of several relevant things. How the game is played by most people, what's interesting to watch, what invites us to purchase the game, and importantly- how to better leverage for community growth, the Twitch/YouTube streaming of games. The last poin...

Re: pls remove barrels or make them useful
nah, barrels are awesome. I remember when I first used them to mine a uranium field. good times things don't necessarily have to be optimal to be fun. heck, figuring out optimal approaches amongst all the gadgets is like 90% of the fun. at least for me. removing non optimal components just makes it ...

genetic alg for building optimization
Writing some GA stuff for building optimization Still some work to go on simulation. Writing about 5-10 lines of code / day as I have lots of other (irl) work to do. If anyone is interested in helping out, would be great. Here's the code so far. 99% of the effort is in simulating factorio feeding/cr...

Re: Anyone use barrels?
I slowed the game down to 0.1 and ran live split. I see 2 seconds / 5 swings. I have 1+11 stack size. I drop power pole down and start counting. The fluid attachment will add some time for sure if that's what you're subtracting. Fluid attachment is practically 1/2 the time for fluid unload. Looks li...

game settings: biter entity attack factor
it'd be good if you could increase the rate at which biters will attack any pipes/power/rail/belts/etc they run across. making them sensitive to EMF or fluid noises in pipes might be explainable and a good setting (seek out power poles and pipes from a distance) this would be a good deathworld setti...

Re: Anyone use barrels?
Maybe on some speedruns they could be used to move sulfuric acid without having to spend time on pipe infra. Maybe. Its a stretch. I was just looking into that. An Any% speedrun requires something like 2200 processing units to be made, which translates into 11000 sulfuric acid, which can be carried...

"Which gives 1.45 seconds to empty a wagon."
Hmm, did you test that in game? I'm not seeing that.

Re: Anyone use barrels?
Pipes get all this unwarranted bad reputation for being UPS inefficient when in fact they were the first to be multi-threaded, way ahead of belts which just got the multi-thread treatment in version 1.1. Yep, sounds like barrels suck pretty bad. 1 storage tank require 5 steel + 20 iron, the equival...

Re: Anyone use barrels?
oh right you can unload with more inserters than you can pumps, though i'm not sure that the throughput is better with vanilla stack inserters compared to vanilla fluid pump, probably not. but you can unload on a curve :-) and alignment is not as important as pumps. Interesting. 13.85*50=692ps/stac...

Re: Anyone use barrels?
I've used heavy oil barrels to prime coal liquefaction. Kind of a killer app for them, tbh.
They can be useful for creeping on biters with flamers, though probably by that time you'll use torpedos. Flamers are fun tho

Re: DeathWorld SpeedRun
Well, on deathworld, you definitely want to wander the map. There's usually (about 90% of the time?) an iron patch somewhere not so close to a biter base. You only need about 1300 copper or so to get settled in. Some maps are absolutely brutal, of course. For those, I haven't figured a way to win ot...
