Re: The obsolete turret problem
I like your suggestion, I think that the direction should be towards making "mixed defense" (i.e. gun+lasers+minefields in various configurations) the optimum, rather than the current mindless laser turret spam. I think that indeed the DPS of regular turrets is even a bit higher than laser...

ratio of coal mines to steam engines
There are a lot of posts on the optimal ratio of pumps:boilers:engines, but I coulnd't find any post discussing the amount of mines needed to keep these boilers fed. What I *think* would be the correct number is: Output per electric miner: 0.525 coal per second * 8MJ per coal = 4.2MJ/s(=4.2MW) Effic...

Great setup!
Any idea how many copper mines you need to saturate a blue belt?
How much iron does this setup consume?

I would also be really nice if the toolbelt would auto-refill from the back pack, for incomplete stacks and/or reserved slots

Re: Let's see your clever builds
Hm, that definitely is a clever way to combine mining and smelting. However, keep in mind it's one electric miner to two stone furnaces, or one electric miner to one steel furnace. That setup would have full throughput for the miners if it had steel furnaces, but it only has half because of the sto...

Re: [MOD 0.12.22] Orbital Ion Cannon
These things are a blast! (sorry...) I really like having something to pour resources in at the end (I don't care about sattelites), and clearing out bases with 10 ion cannons is sooo much fun :). I'm getting good at slowing a bunch of biters, herding them, and timing the ion cannon to kill them (al...

Re: How do you build your factory(s)?
Many of those things need red circuits as well - do you have a red circuit plant at each of the "sub factories"? And does that mean you route oil to each of the plants to make plastic as needed? (e.g. science needs red, military robots need speed module = red+blue, your catch-all will cert...

Re: How do you build your factory(s)?
What do you distribute between bases? Do you send around green+red circuits from a plant to other places? How do you make sure that resources are distributed well, or do you just keep a lot of stock? I generally build a big base that makes almost all stuff, because I like to have a central place to ...

Re: central station, unloading and waiting bays
Thanks for the replies :) Yeah, maybe I should fill some more land to allow at least a single waiting bay behind each station, that would improve efficiency. The equalizing chests sound useful, although I currently use provider chests (for counting as much as for providing), but I guess I can add a ...

central station, unloading and waiting bays
I finally decided to tear down and redesign my central unloading station: http://i.amcat.nl/station.png At the top are five waiting bays, branching from the central line with a normal signal, and converging on the right with chain signals. From the top right the line branches to the various stations...

Re: Friday Facts #124 - Steam Status I
@eurypterus Can't answer your question, but what I do is have two DropBox folders for mods and saves, and I created a symbolic link to the two folders from my Factorio folder. That should certainly work on Mac and linux, and I think Windows also has some sort of "folder shortcut". You coul...

set desired content / filter for storage chests?
I would like to optimize production by making sure goods are stored near where they will be used. For logistics, I would like to have e.g. an (or multiple) "iron storage area", where only iron plates are stored, which are then available on the logistics network. Is there a possibility to s...

In the green inserter, doesn't the gears to inserter need a second long inserter to achieve 1 gear per 0.5 seconds?

Re: Double loop station
Good idea for a chain signal on the free track! That makes a lot of sense since you don't want to (ab)use it as a waiting area. I would indeed always keep one set of tracks without station, the current station in the middle is an "inspection station", ie only used by my passenger train (FA...

Re: Double loop station
Yes, I currently have no "waiting area" - I guess that would mean either increasing the distance between the loops, or creating a separate waiting area before each of the loops or between the loops. If you want to have room for more than 2 trains per station, is there a better setup for a ...

Double loop station
I was wondering whether the design below is "correct" (i.e. deadlock free and throughput efficient). It wanted to make a double station (oil+coal in this case) on a line with links north and south, which allows trains to either turn around after the station or go straight. So I created two...

A good idea, didn't think of that. So much simpler
I have to say the system as it is seems to function well, though, so I'm also happy with my contraption... and that I have finally used combinators!
