Re: Learning curve for oil production and refinement
I think you've just summarized what makes Factorio brilliant. You finish a couple of important lines and think you've got the game mastered, then the game brings in new mechanics with new problems and you are a newbie all over again. If things didn't escalate you would be bored out of your skull in ...

Re: 3D vs 2D which is better for Factorio?
... Even so it's hard to imagine 20,000 3d objects over 20,000 sprites would have a huge impact on performance. If the game had a lot of moving objects. Most of the objects in factorio are static. Mostly because that's just the nature of the game. The only problem is the aliens. Even then if an ali...

Re: multiplayer absent-player mechanics
Sharing of research trees in coop is something that has not been decided yet. It's a bit of dilemma. If you share the research tree an experienced player will end up providing tech to newer players and cause them to miss out on the natural tech progression of the game. On the other hand if you have...

multiplayer absent-player mechanics
How is multiplayer going to work when not all the players in the game are online at the same time? One of the things that was very convenient about Minecraft multiplayer is that your little corner of the world would pause when you logged out and your friends could keep on toiling elsewhere. Is this ...

Re: controlling train loading
Maybe you can use requester chests from which you load the train, have them only request 2 stacks, and have your storage/provider chests far far away, so the train gets loaded with the 2 stacks that were in the requester chests, and when the bots come to refill the chests, the train has already lef...

Re: controlling train loading
I guess for the time being I would have to use only 1 item type per car. For example, at the gear making train stop iron plate gets unloaded from car 1 and gears get loaded into car 2. Cars being rather large, this isn't amenable to compact factories. Idea: perhaps there should be mini-versions of t...

controlling train loading
Is there a way to control train loading? For example, I want to load only 2 stacks of iron plates onto a train car, and no more.
I want to experiment with using very short haul trains to move materials around my factory, and I will need good loading control to make that work.

Crash upon toolbelt research completion
I happened to click on the toolbar just as toolbelt research completed. The research complete sound started playing, and then the game crashed a split second later. - I reloaded the last autosave and then I was able to get past toolbelt research completion without crashing. - I reloaded the last aut...

... - space elevator. Nice. But it makes the most parts of rockets useless. ... ? The throughput of a space elevator isn't necessarily high, it is just cheap to use. You may still need your rockets to meet your throughput needs (or to build more elevators). - what to do with the natives? Killing th...

endgame: rockets, space elevators, interplanetary logistics
Iβve been dreaming about making and playing a game involving an alien world, mining, and automation for years. I have scattered design docs on pieces of paper and google docs here and there, but it has remained a dream and would likely stay that way forever. Then yesterday to my delight, I find Fact...
