I figured out, that the map generator seems so place more water when you set the starting area to a bigger size - that worked for me quite well even through i had to review a few maps before i chose mine.

I'v played a while and started creating outposts whenever there is a need to. If the patch is close to my factory mostly i'll just put belts. If is the way further i'll use trains. And if there are limitations for expanding like cliffs / water / enemies or - and that happens quite often - i forgot t...
