After a but of debugging help from Kumpu,the squeezing turns out to be an effect of a configuration setting in the base game; the Helicopters mod is working just fine! The specific parameter that seems to be behind the squeeze is the 'Sprite Resolution' in the Graphics settings of the Options menu: ...
