I don't own a mac so I can't tell you for sure, but I know that on windows and linux the zip-versions only read and write from their own directory, so I would assume it's the same for mac.
Also, you can configure the read/write path in the config/config.ini file (at least on windows).

Sometimes I've been able to do many searches in rapid succession (10 searches in a minute or so), other times almost every search failed. It's perfectly possible to have multiple installs of factorio one one pc. But only one of them can be the Installer version, all others have to be the zip version. Unless you entered a height and width for the map, the map size is infinite. Due to the way the map is generated, it still might be possible that you're on an island with no way to additional land.
