Ok, so the implementation was TOO basic ... and probably won't work until the *next* release.
Just to clarify, .62 has the support, but .63 actually makes it work? Or does it not work yet?

Figured it out, one of the radar towers from the creative mode mod produces just enough to keep the base from crashing. And yes, I did have to crash my base to figure it out.
Also turns out it consumes a lot of power...

Furthering that point, the listed sinks are only consuming 25MW of power. That's 90MW of unaccounted power. Lasers are consuming 7.1 mW of power, the other one is below 700 kw. If you personally don't like the pollution mechanics, then you can effectively disable them using the advanced settings when creating a map. You could also change some of the settings in that tab (if I remember right) to change how much Pollution affects the aliens, try out a few different settings...
