Re: Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch™

Guys,

Nintendo Switch is ARM. Does that mean ARM factorio (at least servers, maybe clients) are an option now? And HOW THE HECK did you manage to achieve determinism between ARM and x86?!

Re: Using the graphics card to help the CPU out…

and i'm interested in how you came to the first conclusion without having seen the source to begin with. I've seen enough FFF posts to build a reasonable amount of trust for the guys. They described enough of very-non-trivial optimizations so that I can say they probably dug deep into all the hotsp...

Re: Using the graphics card to help the CPU out…

Sorry for spoiling it to you, but only non-rendering/non-graphics feature Factorio currently has, that would make sense to accelerate by GPU is generating of the map preview :P I wish I could disagree, but it's most likely true - at least in the current game architecture. Just so you know. Factorio...

Re: Using the graphics card to help the CPU out…

A big issue with GPUs is that moving data from/to a gpu is expensive. It's bad enough that ie. moving data from/to gpu takes 10x more time than the simple computation you have to do. It only makes sense if you have big enough computation to do or you don't have to move the data from the GPU. Also, F...

Re: Using the graphics card to help the CPU out…

GPU engineer here. I will omit all of the issues connected with implementing all of the stuff on GPUs and portability of such solutions and skip directly to the other difficulties. Basically, GPU is a bunch (hundreds to thousands) very small and relatively dumb cpu-like cores. It is also often the c...

Re: Hardcore Vanilla

Congrats Mskvaer in your addiction! Curious thing, Factoro was actually developed with all of the alternative maps in mind and for example Railworld is I think the #2 (or #1 really if you look at what the trains are designed to do) way the game is "supposed" to be played. Technically mods ...

That's the most factorio devs' thing I've seen in a long time. Come on, can you set the standarts any higher...?! Absolutely love the attention.

Re: Implement Super Ultrawide support?

I tried playing Factorio over two FHD monitors side-by-side (my usual setup), that's like 32:9 aspect ratio. Would really welcome some UX changes for both ultrawide and multi-monitor. Possibly using sides of the screen space for things like production graphs and map - would really add the ultimate c...

Re: Are griefers/trolling common?

Can't say for sure but: 1) I had seen servers having permissions systems so that you can only use ie. blueprints after getting approved and you can't really do *too* much damage without them. That suggests that they are out there or at least there is fear of them. 2) I had never personally met a gri...

Re: Version 1.1 stable build release

A week or two after the release a major version (1.1 in this case) is pretty much bug-free and ready to move to. In other words, just move when you feel like it - the 1.1 development version is more stable than most of the other released games anyway.

Re: Performance while running the game on Android phone

Well, to be honest, if a motivated enough individual with some reputation in the community would ask, they probably could get the source access (I've heard that some people did already) and try compiling it for ARM. I recall that devs spoke about some issues with the graphics pipeline (opengl?) not ...

Re: Fluid Optimization not fixed for release?

From what I know, the fluid flow logic redesign had encountered a few really exotic nad difficult problems that the guys were unable to solve. It was in my opinion a difficult decision to make to cancel that, but I hope they'll come back to it in the future and have another take on it.

Re: Friday Facts #359 - Crash site: The beginning

I'd really like to have the NPE machines (lab, generator, special assembling machines...) as an accelerated start option. It'd be very organic and fit well into the game IMO.

Re: Factorio Gear Pendant?

I think that the market for that would be very small, but hell, wouldn't that be cool! I'd ask a jeweler for the price of it to be custom-made, I expect pretty high (few hundred dollars/euro) though. You could also look for other people who would like to have one of their own, as that'll definitely ...

Re: [Poll] 0.17 Quickbar

The new one feels like a CAD program UI rather than a game. I really like it. Having up to 10 bar presets you can choose from. Building ghosts when you don't have an item too. Only issue is you have to set it up and it takes some time. What if it wasn't per save but rather per game installation?

better UX for temporary train stations

A very simple one. TL;DR Allow to make temporary train stop from the main map (hotkey "m") What ? In .17 one can open train's gui and on the map ctrl-click on a piece of rail to make the train go to a temporary stop. It would be nice to have the same option from the "main" map. I...

That's the Factorio staff. "Can I do XXX?" "Yeah, we already automatized that for you!"
