Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

Very disappointed in this decision, to say the least. I feel betrayed.

This is not a decision you should make in the middle of a game release. If you didn't want to deal with 32-bit then you should have decided on that from the outset, so that people like myself didn't waste our time on it.

Re: Why are electric furnaces so expensive?

Steel furnaces already use less energy and produce less pollution than electric furnaces actually. You should only switch to electric furnaces if you plan on using modules with them or plan on powering them with solar panels.

[0.12.1] Connect failure when IPv4 not present (xp or linux without the module)

Basically Factorio generates this "Binding IPV6 socket failed: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket." error when attempting to either host or connect to a multiplayer game over IPv4 on Windows XP. Shortly after the error happens the game mysteriously crashes as well...

Just chiming in I'm getting the same problem as the above poster here. Running on Windows XP and IPv4 myself.

Re: Version 0.12.0

Anyone else having a problem with screen tearing? I tried switching to fullscreen and turning on vsync with no effect. This has never been a problem for me with Factorio before until now. What changed? In addition to this I also appear to be having some sort of odd rendering issue with electric pol...

Re: I did the Math on Oil Production

What I mean by this is that one chemical plant can process 48 Heavy oil per min, and 12 is a quarter of what it can handle. Therefore, you can have up to 4 refineries before you need to put down another chemical plant to crack the heavy to light. Haven't had a look at the rest of your math, but you...

Re: Upcoming content

I really hope OP doesn't read the above post and take it at face value, because it is the most rubbish post I have ever read about someone describing Factorio and its devs. Would you mind explaining why you disagree with anything that I've said, specifically, instead of dismissing it outright? It's...

Re: Upcoming content

The game currently has very little in the way of a real campaign and relies almost entirely on its random map generator to create scenarios to beat. The end goal in a given random map at the moment is a rather tenuous final technology to simply research and build, which ends the game upon doing so. ...

Re: Version 0.11.1

Windows XP is end of life. You should not make any efforts on supporting that OS anymore. Does the lack of XP support from Microsoft change anything that would matter to game developers? I doubt Microsoft has added any actual functionality in the past few years, so the current lack of security upda...

Re: Solar Panel return on investment

I have to say I'm pretty strongly against this idea of maintenance requirements for solar panels. Making one option simply more tedious than another is never a good way to balance player choice. Furthermore, with the way the game currently works maintenance would force the player to use robots if th...

Re: If you want to work on the wiki you need an account

I'd have to agree that registration in general goes against the spirit of a wiki; however, I understand the need for countermeasures in order to beat spam. I have seen the destruction spambots can wreck upon a wiki and it's killed wikis for a particular topic I care about on more than one occasion n...

Re: If you want to work on the wiki you need an account

My mistake, if you're not in charge of the wiki then my comment was directed at whoever actually is. If you want to change it, then change it, or make your own wiki or whatever. :) But I really don't like to discuss, how a wiki could be made better; do it and if someone doesn't like it he can use th...

Re: If you want to work on the wiki you need an account

Oh hey, I didn't even think to look yet. Guess someone already had the same idea. Shame most of the pages seem to be locked from editing for some reason; they've got some pretty outdated information. I think you should really step back and reconsider the function of a wiki and whether it's the right...

Re: If you want to work on the wiki you need an account

I think this whole account signup business in general is incredibly invasive and is the entire reason I haven't edited the wiki at all yet. And I most certainly would have; every time I visit it I feel the urge to fix some of the broken English on it. I'm seriously considering starting a wikia site ...

Re: Optimizing energy consumption with productivity modules

The simple fact that you only need to affect one level 3 assembler with full productivity modules with a basic beacon in order to make the beacon useful--and not only does it assemble items faster (90% speed vs. 40% * 2) and use less power (1509 kW vs. 1764 kW), but also generates far less pollution...

Re: Productivity Module Math

One very important thing to note is that you can always get the benefits of productivity modules in labs without worrying about pollution escalation because they don't produce any pollution in the first place. Labs also have very low base power consumption compared to other devices, so the % increas...

Re: Supression of the size shift of electric furnaces

Steel furnaces actually do not quite have the same energy consumption as electric furnaces. If you compare coal or solid fuel use between the two, an electric furnace actually uses up twice as much energy due to the 1/2 energy conversion factor for heating boilers. One piece of coal will convert twi...
