Re: Friday Facts #241 - New player experience

If not too time intensive I would suggest to give players with names you deem offensive 1 more chance (and maybe an email) to change it after the week deadline.
There is an (admittedly tiny) chance that the name is only accidentally offensive, or they simply don't read FFF.

we have come to the conclusion that we need more time

I'm sure that if you give it the time and attention it needs you will find a satisfactory solution.

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

One thing that suddenly stikes me is that belts in factorio are not really used as belts in real factories. Of course to some extent they are, but for example something like a splitter serves no purpose in real world factories. Instead you would have some device that sends items left or right depend...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

So, by all accounts the bot charging nerfs are a reality now, but could the devs please provide a modding API to limit bot interactions with chests?

Re: Belts vs Bots - A response to the latest FFF

I'm not saying you don't deserve that simpler option. It allows you launch a rocket or a few, fair enough. But it's really disheartening when people like me pour hours into making elaborate systems only for the game to push us in a direction we don't want to go. I really don't understand how the ga...

Re: In support of twinsen and open/polite debate

Part of understanding which side of a debate is more or less correct is understanding both sides. Every single pro-bot player uses the same arguments. Quantity of bots per roboport, research level, power usage, initial investment, ups, fun. I don't see a single such person conceding a single point....

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

WRONG... combined with a future buff to belts they are allowing something other then belts to be an alternative. Unless they improve belts to the point that it's possible to have the same or better performance as bots do now then they are not giving any alternative, only taking the current one away...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

Also aside great ideas in this thread i wanna see belt "ghost bulding" like train tracks. Why? Because belts shine in middle distances and this is great feature for train tracks also it will be nice for belts. I never thought of that. That might actually get rid of some of the tedium of p...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

The more I think about this the more confused I get. After reading more or less 20 pages I've completely lost sight of what role bots are supposed to play in the game. Long distance single items delivery to player and other low throughput items? Short distance high throughput? If bots are supposed t...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

I find any game with mechanics and units to be more interesting when there's an assortment to choose from and each has its place. There's definitive trade-offs with pros and cons the player is faced with to weigh and ultimately deal with. If the choice of what to do is always so obvious, appeal is ...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

I think that you guys are over-thinking the bot vs belt thing too much. I know it's appealing as a designer to strike the "perfect balance", and have bots and belts co-exist with their own niche, but I suspect that you will find that that compromise will end up just making both belts and ...

Re: Friday Facts #224 - Bots versus belts

Bot throughput is already limited to the speed of the inserters being used. The only thing this would do is stop bots from being able to deliver large amounts of goods in a single burst. Logistic bots can supply infinite resources, but they only get into assemblers as fast as inserts can go. Faster...

That's not how slaves work.
And so what? If I get my enjoyment out of watching someone else do the work I tell them to, what's wrong with that?

Re: Friday Facts #224 - Bots versus belts

This talk of legislating fun is really depressing, so instead I will try to think of some ways to make belts more fun. Even just more circuit controls on splitters for instance, so we can set a splitter to always send items to the right/left. With current approaches the only option is to disable the...

Re: Friday Facts #224 - Bots versus belts

Belts are fun, bots are boring Wrong. Belts are boring. Bots are boring. The fun part about factorio is trains. The factory is just an excuse for building a logistics system using trains. Laying 32 belts of iron to feed things is time consuming and boring, and means I spend less time doing actual f...

Re: Friday Facts #198 - Rail segment visualisation

Now, I read a lot of comments here claiming that using CRC this way is horrible because of the high chance of collision. But even if the chance of collision is way worse than P=4.42378*10^-8 for 20 blueprints (as some claimed), I think this is completely irrelevant. I assume that the clever Factori...

Re: Friday Facts #198 - Rail segment visualisation

Devs, draknor is absolutely right about CRC32 not being a good choice, and it has little to do with hash output size. All of the math posted above and in the FFF is based on an incorrect assumption: that every hash value has an equal probability of being selected. This is not the case for CRC32. Th...

Factorio website troubles

Maybe I'm going crazy, but it seems like factorio.com no longer loads for me, while http://www.factorio.com does.
For factorio.com I just get a "request timed out".
Is this just me?
I seem to remember typing just factorio.com in the past, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.
