I uninstalled, moved the entire Factorio folder in appdata/roaming, and reinstalled 16.5 in Steam.

I went back to 0.15.40 and got the same problem after about 5 minutes. I have been using Factorio successfully since 0.12, and have never had a crash of any kind, nor have I found any bugs that prevented the game from continuing. In this case the object cannot be mined so it will stay there forever ...
