yes, middle clicking on an empty slot will popup a window where you set which item you want there. and middle clicking on an already filled slot reserves that slot to the item that is currently occupying it. And ctrl + middle click to remove the reservation, but anyway, theres a bug report ( LINK )...

Hmm, well it took me a while to understand this (its early morning where i am, kinda sleepy). Anyways, if you shift click the stack in your inventory it will fill your toolbar stack slot. If you ctrl click an empty slot on your toolbar (no need to open inventory), it will fill/empty your entire tool...

Or you can build it, just for the sake of completing the goal if you want. After that, you can also just place it down. As long as you dont click and then activate it, you can continue playing.
