Re: Friday Facts #375 - Quality

I'm definitely in the camp that the names need some work. Much of the basic points been said already, but I do feel like I have something to add to the discussion in that it feels like the naming convention might be well served by looting machining tolerances or computer chip production for jargon, ...

Re: Friday Facts #351 - Beacon re-redesign & Simplified fluid mixing

Honestly, with the new beacon, I can't help but wonder how it would look for the animation to play backwards , and then for the pulse to go through the cables after it finishes travelling down the spike. After all, the idea of effect transmission basically being connections via underground cables ma...

Re: Friday Facts #329 - Campaign reassessment

When it comes to campaign design, I think it may be worth considering whether science packs --- or rather, whether every set of science packs --- are actually the most natural divide here. You mention that new players have a tendency to restart on their own a few times and recollection of my own lon...

Re: Friday Facts #309 - Controversial opinions

I honestly quite like the idea of biters probing defenses and bots taking more time to build thing. Both opinions stem from the same source really: Factorio takes a fair bit of inspiration from the tower defense and RTS genres, and I think it could be well served by pilfering even more. I had a fair...

Re: 0.17 Campaign Observations and Commentary (Handcrafting, Cliffs, and a sidenote on difficulty)

Actually, the version just before 0.17 release had no hand crafting the entire time, but we were concerned that new players would expect it to be like that in Freeplay. I do cringe every time i see a tester reach the second area and queue up a lab. "Why is this taking so long?" they ask, ...

0.17 Campaign Observations and Commentary (Handcrafting, Cliffs, and a sidenote on difficulty)

After playing the new campaign I thought I'd give some observations. Mostly things I haven't seen others mention already. Lazy Bastard-Lite: This thing right here is the main reason I'm writing this topic. The crafting-in-inventory technology and everything that comes before it. I may be a veteran, ...

Re: Friday Facts #173 - Nuclear stuff is almost done

Good to see that nuclear power is progressing, but I'll admit it's sad to see the close water cycle go. :(

I hope it's eventually able to make it in in some form.

Re: Friday Facts #164 - Nuclear power

Molten salt has been suggested a fair few times in this thread, and I'd like to throw my own support in for it. I'll also mention that hot oil can be used for the same purpose if you want different recipes to consider. The key reason I support it it is that molten salt, along with hot oil, lends its...

Re: Friday Facts #164 - Nuclear power

I've had a thought, so here's a proposed alternative to the reactor explosion, that still remains dangerous and has it's own "cool factor". Instead of outright exploding if it gets too hot, since "no steam" = "no steam or hydrogen explosion" what if the problem is just ...

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

Because seriously, not all of us have the budget for good or even recent systems and for some of us $20 for a hundred hour plus game that runs on a toaster is actually a selling point. Because you know... Money . Not everybody has a decent or significant disposable budget and some of us like to do ...

No, trust me, if they been changed to match Earth's solar input per square meter you would have you would have heard about it. There is roughly an order of magnitude of difference after all.

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

To be perfectly plain... Anyone that, in the year 2016, is complaining about a lack of a 32-bit executable for a videogame should be taken out back and shot. Seriously though, these are probably the same people who are still using Windows XP, write "Microsoft" as "Micro$oft" and...

Also to be considered: How people set up their factories can have a lot of effect on how easy it is to expand the factory for other products. For instance, if you set things up so that the labs are entirely self contained, requiring only Iron, Copper, and Petroleum Gas and you make it harder to prod...

Re: Friday facts #157 - We are able to eat paper, but we don't do it

Agreed: The FFF are a wonderful insight into games development and make a pretty excellent balance of of explaining things for the layman while still giving a great understanding of what the devs are going through.

Re: Games Like Factorio

So because there was some confusion earlier, (but also because optimization is very fun and I want to show off my results) I'd like to a longer writeup and give some screenshots for Factory Idle . So at first you get a setup that's somewhere between Factorio and Big Pharma: A top down view with a li...

Re: Friday facts #153 - 0.13 Stable, 0.14 Experimental

As far as suggestions go, I think the first and most obvious is an onboard electric generator: Just as any real world car can pull energy from the engine to run it's peripherals, so too could vehicles use their fuel stocks in order to power grid equipment. What if the Fusion Reactor would tu...

Re: Solar panels less of a no-brainer

So I've read a bunch here lately I think it's worth reiterating that the core of the complaints with solar vs steam (at least for my own self, but there are others who seem to agree with me) isn't that solar has too much power, it's that solar has very little in the way of logistics puzzles attached...

Another in the vein of somewhere between Factorio and Big Pharma is factoryidle.com

And from the look of things it's all about optimizing your layouts then waiting for it to pay off.
