You can gain a significant boost to your running speed by paving your path with stone blocks or concrete.

Other people seem to setup a rail line and use a train for faster transport around the map.

Use efficiency modules everywhere by default. They reduce the power drain and pollution generated. Use speed modules maybe on Pumpjacks and maybe with Assembly Machines making something slow. Ah - ha! So that's what the poison capsules are supposed to be used for. I kinda like driving around the enemy nests in a big circle and lobbing shells through the worms into the spawners while screaming at the top of my lungs. If you're just running a radar as a standalone mini-base, 6 solar collectors and 5 accumulators will make it almost through the night.

7 and 6 will stay powered up forever....
